Volunteering
People who freely give their time, energy and commitment are vital to the work we do across Lancashire.
Volunteers help us deliver our life changing services across Lancashire. From raising money at our fundraising events to delivering our projects in schools, there are many opportunities to get involved.
FAQ's
-
Anyone with enthusiasm and commitment can volunteer, regardless of background or previous experience. Some specific roles may require minimum age or particular skills, which will be clearly outlined in each opportunity description.
-
Roles range from supporting group activities, fundraising, admin work, and helping at events. Each role has a unique focus, so volunteers can match opportunities to their interests and skills. You don't need to stay in just one volunteer role, and can volunteer in other areas of the organisation if there are opportunities. You can find our role-specific volunteer openings in our job opening section of our careers page. However, if none are available, please connect with us! We are always looking for general volunteers to help us on an ad-hoc basis.
-
All of our opportunities are flexible and offer short-term or event-based volunteering, though we may ask for a regular commitment over several months to ensure continuity and positive impact. However it is up to you how much time you want to commit to us.
-
For roles involving direct support with vulnerable individuals, a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required. We will let you know during the recruitment process.
-
Absolutely! Most roles are designed to be flexible to accommodate work, study, or family responsibilities. Scheduling and event options are available to suit individual circumstances. We appreciate that everyone has a life outside of their volunteering roles, and we will work with you to make sure it's the right fit.
-
Yes, reasonable agreed-upon expenses (e.g., travel) will be reimbursed. Details are provided before the start date.
-
Some opportunities allow group or paired volunteering (eg. Events), but this depends on the specific role and organisational needs. It’s best to check during your application or interview.
-
Every volunteer has a designated contact person or volunteer supervisor for ongoing support, supervision, and help with any concerns.
-
I am really enjoying myself volunteering for Lancashire Mind and would recommend it to everyone.

-
Volunteering has given me a sense of connection and belonging. It's a regular activity for a few hours a week and gets me out of the house. I love helping with the fundraising activities.
-
Studies have shown that those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who don’t volunteer. The social interaction involved in volunteer work improves mental and emotional health, reduces stress and helps against anxiety and depression.
-
It places you in situations where you can navigate new challenges, leading to enhanced self-esteem and confidence. Whether you’re mastering a new tool at a community garden or learning the ropes of event management during a fundraiser, the skills you develop are transferable and can enhance your professional life.
-
One of the more well-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people and organisations in need. And volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills.
